Q&A |

OSHA Requires It . . .
Operators Need It . . .
Gregory Poole Equipment Company Has It |

|
Operators of powered construction and industrial trucks should be fully trained and certified as required by federal regulation. OSHA Standard 1910.178 provides the occupational safety and health standards for materials handling and storage as they pertain to powered industrial trucks. For a current copy of the full regulations document, click here.
Operators are required to complete formal classroom training, practical hands-on training, and an evaluation. Re-certification is required after three years, or if an operator is involved in an accident or observed using the vehicle in an unsafe manner.
Employers need an effective and comprehensive training program to meet this OSHA regulation. Additionally, many insurers either require that operators are certified or recognize the value of OSHA operator safety training with preferred rates.
Gregory Poole Equipment Company helps you meet and exceed OSHA standards by offering specialized and comprehensive training materials and programs for ALL powered industrial truck makes and models, boom/scissors lifts, and telehandlers. Other equipment and vehicle training is available for front loaders, skid steers, backhoes, yard spotters, and more. Courses are conducted by Gregory Poole Master Trainers.

Who must be trained?
Each and every operator. This means that full-time, part-time, seasonal, substitute, and occasional operators -- regardless of experience -- should be trained. In other words, you cannot legally allow any one of your operators - even experienced operators - to operate a powered industrial truck until they have successfully passed the required training and evaluation by a qualified instructor. And while OSHA currently only strongly recommends that construction equipment operators be certified, the industry is moving in the direction of requiring it in the near future.
Is general training adequate?
No. Your training must be site-and equipment-specific. There are too many differences with equipment and too many variables with each site to address your specific safety issues in a general training program.
What must the training program include?
A combination of formal (classroom-type) and hands-on training in a series of truck and workplace related topics. Classroom training last about 4 hours per class and about 15 minutes per person for the evaluation.
Gregory Poole offers a seven-part training program that addresses key training issues, including lift truck fundamentals, pre-operational inspection, operating safety guidelines, safe load-handling techniques, fueling gasoline, diesel and liquid propane lift trucks, and battery charging and recharging.
Why should companies comply?
-
Costly Damages: Improper Lift Truck operation is the major cause of warehouse and plant damages.
-
Loss of Life and Limb: Powered industrial truck accidents cause approx. 107 fatalities and 34,000 serious injuries each year.
-
Lost Productivity: Employers lose an estimated 20,000 workdays annually due to lift truck accidents.
-
Risk of Litigation: Employers spend up to $42 million annually in accident-related litigation and settlements.
-
Risk of Fines: If you have an accident, a complaint by an employee, or a random visit by an inspector, you could be cited for the infraction and have to pay a substantial fine.
Does Gregory Poole offer Train the Trainer Programs?
Yes, we provide Train the Trainer Programs whereby we train one or more of your employees to become your in-house safety trainers. Our trainer comes to your facility and uses your equipment during the class in order to maintain the integrity of the site and equipment sections of the OSHA Law. |
