Rebuild Options

Component: In order to assure the highest quality, longest lasting rebuilt components, Gregory Poole completely disassembles, cleans and inspects each unit according to Cat's® rebuilding procedures. Each technician is factory trained on the specific components he rebuilds.

Unlike a lot of our competitors in the area, Gregory Poole rebuilds transmissions, final drives, torque converters and hydraulic power control units (HPCU's) for Cat machines in-house. This gives you the opportunity to explore the various repair options available. We also provide testing of all transmissions that we rebuild to insure you receive a quality product that you can depend on.

Engine: Gregory Poole has the service capability to rebuild and refurbish various engine components with the expertise that comes with being the leading Cat dealer in the Southeast. As a trusted provider of parts, maintenance and repair, you are assured of a high quality rebuilt engine for your Cat machine. In our Specialization Shop, all engine rebuilds and repairs are dynamometer tested before being returned to the customer.

Welding and Bore Machining

Repairing "out of round" bores used to require fabrication of a sleeve insert to restore a bore to original dimensions. This method is not simple, not cost-effective and in many instances doesn't last very long. Gregory Poole offers the solution of welding and boring for this problem. If you have an "out of round" bore on any machine, conveyor or structure, we can build them with weld material and bore them back to original dimensions. We have the capability and tooling to bore in excess of 16 inch diameters. Stop wear before it gets worse and causes additional downtime and expense.

Engine Maintenance and Repair Options
Engine Maintenance and Repair Options Flowchart from Cat.com. This article details preventative maintenance and before failure and after failure repair options.

Rebuild Process

The rebuild process starts with the assemblies stripped and disassembled. All parts go through a cleaning process to strip old paint, grease and varnish from the components. Fuel systems, heads, turbochargers and governors are serviced in specialized areas with the fuel systems and governors tested on state-of-the-art test benches to provide accurate, adjustment-free performance.

After reassembly of the engine, the unit is then sent to a test cell for dyno-testing. The engine is run under load on our 2000 horsepower dynamometer to guarantee rated horsepower and proper break-in.

Advanced Warning

Engine failures usually give advanced warning, so understanding and reacting to these signals can save you time and money. In fact, a repair performed before failure can get your equipment back to work sooner, cost up to three times less than after-failure repairs, and be scheduled at your convenience.

Gregory Poole can help

Gregory Poole can help you analyze S•O•S report data, repair indicators, and inspection results. If service is needed, we offer both before-failure and after-failure repair options. Our professional dealer technicians have the training and technology to quickly evaluate your engine's condition and recommend the most economical option. In addition, we can offer you exchange engine options and remanufactured engine parts that offer like-new performance at 20-50% off the new replacement price. These parts are built and tested with the same exact specifications as new Cat parts and offer the same warranty. Most exchange engine parts are available off-the-shelf.

Technical Analysis

Technical Analysis is a two-level diagnostic inspection of the engine. It can pinpoint the cause and the extent of a problem. Often this type of inspection shortens repair time and reduces repair costs. Level I is a general visual examination of the engine condition. Level II is a more extensive inspection of a specific system that Level I identifies as not performing properly.

Engine Repair Indicator Kit (ERIK) - Evaluate planned and problem repair indicators utilizing the Engine Overhaul Estimator Guide and the results of a basic non-technical inspection.

Component Inspection/Repair

Inspection may reveal that a component such as a water pump, starter or turbocharger needs repair or replacement. Exchange programs include components that meet your needs with off-the-shelf availability. Dealer Exchange and Cat Remanufactured Products are available. Component Repair Kits are also available so you can make your own repairs.

Tune-up

It may be that a tune-up is all that an engine needs to restore power, performance and fuel efficiency. A normal tune-up period would be once a year or before a scheduled job to assure machine performance.

Cooling System Maintenance

Research shows that 40% of all premature engine failures can be attributed to cooling system deficiencies. Proper cooling system maintenance significantly reduces the risk of catastrophic engine failures.

Repair Determination Inspection (RDI)

This thorough internal engine inspection will help determine any needed repairs. This is the key step in helping us decide which repair option is best for you.
