What's the Right Machine for You?

Tip Time

Skid Steer Loaders, Multi Terrain Loaders and new Compact Track Loaders

Matching the right machine to the primary services offered by a contractor can save time and, ultimately, make a job more profitable.

But deciding when to use a skid steer loader vs. a multi terrain loader can be a difficult decision—and the answer can change from one job to another. The introduction of new Cat® Compact Track Loaders, meanwhile, has added another machine to the equation.

The good news: If you properly analyze the benefits, you’re all but guaranteed to improve your crew’s productivity and your bottom line.

So which machine—skid steer loader, multi terrain loader or compact track loader—is the best fit for your jobsite?

Deciding between Skid Steer Loaders, Multi Terrain Loaders and new Compact Track Loaders

Skid Steer Loaders

Skid Steer LoaderSkid steers have been around longer than their rubber track counterparts, and are still the best fit for many applications—mostly because of their speed.

“For everyday work the skid steer, we’re finding, can grade very well,” Hollowell says. “Any time we have a crew of concrete guys behind us, we can outrun a grader.”

Consider the wheeled machine when:

  • Working on surfaces that aren’t particularly sloped, rugged or wet. If a SSL can get the job done, it’s often the right choice because of the speed and productivity the wheels provide.
  • Looking for compaction. The tires compact materials, which is desirable in some applications.

Multi Terrain Loaders

Multi Terrain LoaderMTLs feature rubber track undercarriages, which don’t damage tender surfaces. “You can get through a finished yard without destroying it,” says Steve Hutchison, an operator for Mike Dusselier Concrete Flatwork Co. Inc., Olathe, Kan. That saves the firm substantial seeding and sodding time.

Also consider MTLs when:

  • Working in wet conditions. The undercarriage provides low ground pressure and excellent flotation so contractors can work in almost any weather.
  • Traveling over curbs and sidewalks, which also could be damaged by other machines.
  • Working in sharp aggregate or construction sites where nails and other objects can puncture tires.
  • Working on grades. Operators report the MTLs have better gripping than SSLs.

Compact Track Loaders

Compact Track LoaderCTLs feature a steel track undercarriage, compared with the rubber undercarriage on MTLs. The steel provides extra strength and durability.

“It’s more of a gritty machine,” says Steven Stratton, president of Steven Stratton Inc., Hastings, Fla. “It’s designed to be a workhorse.”

Consider CTLs when:

  • Working in the toughest applications. The undercarriage can handle sand, coarse mud and even demolition work. Those in the field also report that the tracks hold up well when working in jagged stone.
  • Working in fines. Silt and sand sometimes damage rubber track undercarriages, but those involved in the testing of the Cat CTLs reported no problems from the fine materials.
  • Power is required. The Cat CTLs have an increase of about 10 horsepower over the comparable MTLs, but those in the field report it feels more like 20 horsepower.
  • Speed AND tracks are required. The fully suspended steel track undercarriage helps deliver a smooth ride, which in turn aids in load retention. The standard Two Speed on the Cat CTLs mean the machines can move at 8.5 mph while retaining their load.

That speed of the Cat CTLs has not gone unnoticed by Cork Peterson, vice president of Peterson Contractors Inc. “If you can get one (hole) more per day, it doesn’t cost you anything—just a little bit of rock,” Peterson says. “The labor is the same, the machine is the same. The secret is getting the rock to the hole fast enough.”

4 Do-It-Yourself Preventative Maintenance Tips

1) Make It A Habit - Daily Walk Around Inspections

Every day, you or your equipment operator should conduct a thorough walk-around inspection before beginning work. Pay close attention to the following:

  • Loose belts
  • Mud or debris buildup
  • Oil or coolant leaks
  • Broken or worn parts

Spending a few minutes every day making minor adjustments can save days of downtime - don't neglect simple problems; they will lead to failures down the road.

2) Prediction Pays - Sample Fluids Regularly

Make smarter decisions regarding machine maintenance and reduce unexpected downtime. How? Monitor your equipment, predict, and prevent possible failures by conducting regular fluid and oil analysis. Follow the recommended fluid and oil sampling schedules for your machine to better understand machine conditions and greatly reduce long-term damage and unnecessary expense.

Keep in mind - your sampling interval might be longer if your engine has a larger-than-standard oil capacity or shorter if your engine is exposed to conditions that tend to cause oil degradation, such as high load factor operation, improper fuel use, or poor prior maintenance.

Examine fluids to identify:

Wear metals: High level of wear metals indicates a high level of engine wear, and can cause corrosion in associated components

Fuel: Fuel dilution reduces oil viscosity, destroying it's lubricating properties

Water: Water causes oil to form a sludge which can plug filters

Glycol: Glycol (coolant) contamination causes rapid oil oxidation and can lead to major engine failure

Soot: Excessive soot indicates possible over fueling, incorrect combustion temperatures, low operating revolutions, restricted intake and exhaust systems, and/or faulty turbochargers

Oxidation: Oxidation suggests overheating, causing rapid evaporation of volatile oil fractions, and can lead to accelerated component wear

Sulfur: High sulfur concentrations often indicate abnormally low operating temperatures. Sulfurous gas attacks the thin oil films that provide lubrication for piston rings and cylinder liners, placing extra burden on the lubricant.

Fluid Sample kits include postage paid envelopes and are available at every Gregory Poole branch or online at our PartStore. Expert, in-house lab technicians conduct comprehensive fluid and cooling system analyses - determining internal wear, oil condition, oil contamination levels, and system performance. You may receive the results as quickly as 24 hours after our lab receives the samples. Plus, the detailed analysis reports will increase the resale value of your machine!

3) Monitor Your Cooling System

Did you know coolant or cooling system problems contribute to more than 50 percent of all engine failures? Factors leading to failure include:

  • Inadequate cooling system maintenance
  • Incorrect fluid concentration
  • Overheating
  • Poor operational procedures (heavy lugging, inadequate cool down)
  • System problems such as stray electrical current or block heater failure

Protect and extend the life of your transmission and hydraulic components. Follow manufacturer guidelines for cooling system maintenance, keeping in mind these rules of thumb:

  • Always allow engine to cool before adding coolant
  • Replace fluid or replenish inhibitor chemicals at recommended intervals
  • Use the proper fluids: water is used to transfer heat, and additives protect metal surfaces from corrosion, rust, scale, and pitting
  • Never use water alone - it's corrosive and doesn't protect against freezing or boiling
  • Never use tap water - it has too many contaminants
  • For best results - use distilled or ionized water with manufacturer recommended supplemental coolant additives or inhibited coolant
  • Go slow! Air pockets can form if system is filled at a rate greater than five gallons per minute
  • Let it run: After draining and refilling, operate engine without filler cap until coolant reaches a stable level and normal operating temperature
  • If the engine is stored in below freezing temperatures, protect system to lowest outside temperatures or drain completely to avoid freezing
